If you ever
decide to visit the famous cave of Melidoni do not miss the opportunity to
visit the village of Melidoni, as well.
Located
about 28km east of Rethymno, It is a beautiful place full of old buildings,
alive evidences of the period when Crete was under the rule of the Republic of
Venice.
The name of
the village comes from the Byzantine
family of Melidoni or from a record keeping which counted up a thousand women, in
Italian: mille done.
In Melidoni
you can find more than a hundred wells and among them the "royal well", at the main square of the
village.
Many people
of Melidoni took part at the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Turks, in 1821, but those, whose name
wrote history, were the Melidoni brothers, George, Helias and Antoni.
It is worth
visiting the old monastery of Saint George, the church of which survived
through the ages.
Nowadays
Melidoni is a vivid place registered in a list of villages of high cultural heritage.
