The
Esychakis Estate, Metochi Esychaki in greek, was built by the Venetians during
their occupation of Crete.
Located in
the village of Alikianos in Chania, it
was a part of the Da Molin' s feudal estate. The building was used by the
Ottomans, as well, until the general of
the Greek army, Timoleon Vassos, turned it
into his headquarters. Later the rich Esychakis family bought it.
The main
feature of the Esychakis Estate complex is an old olive oil mill. You can also see there a warehouse
for agricultural products, a huge internal yard, a Turkish hammam and a tower.
Although Metochi Esychaki, is a building of great social and historical importance for the area, a building listed for preservation, it is a
scene of decay and dereliction.
It presents particular problems of stability. Unfortunately, the
restoration of buildings listed in the preservation lists is an expensive and
time-consuming venture.
